hot tyres
7 May and 8 October, 12 p.m. and 3 p.m
The museum blacksmith, the wheelwright and their assistants will show you an almost extinct craft. At the historic village smithy, they shod wooden spoked wheels with iron bands. To do this, the iron rings must first be heated and stretched in the fire. When mounting the hot tires, the assistants repeatedly put out plenty of water to prevent the wooden wheels from catching fire and the tires from contracting on the wooden rims. The lengthy procedure, which requires a lot of experience, clearly shows how wheelwrights and blacksmiths used to work hand in hand in the village.
