Conference DorfModerne

Rural infrastructure buildings 1950 - 1980

Fourth meeting of the association

“From the Nissenhütte to the QUELLE prefabricated house. Everyday life in rural areas after 1945"

the open-air museums on Kiekeberg, Kommern and Bad Windsheim
After 1960 at the latest, working conditions and everyday life in the country changed massively – and so did the villages: farms were moved to the open fields, roads were expanded, and new housing estates were formed on the outskirts, the size of which could exceed that of the old town several times over. Modern consumer behavior also became increasingly visible: in the form of shops with large shop windows, cafés, kiosks, community freezers and bank branches, the architecture of which is still striking today and is often controversial. The latter also applies to the new buildings of numerous schools, churches, rectory and town halls as well as other public facilities. In their free time, people went to swimming pools, miniature golf courses, cinemas and discotheques. At the same time, the supply and disposal infrastructure was expanded, without which development would not have been possible 20th century on. She also discusses the present and future of the buildings, which today are often in need of renovation or are due to be abandoned due to insufficient use - if, like many small shops and bank branches, they have not already disappeared.
