Collection focus

As a museum of everyday cultural history in the Rhineland, the collection of the LVR open-air museum in Kommern and the Rheinisches Landesmuseum für Volkskunde is intended to provide a wide-ranging overview of those objects that have shaped and shaped everyday life in the Rhineland to the present day.
The thematic focal points of the collection included priority:
  • pottery
  • toy
  • Agricultural implements and machines
  • tools and handicrafts
  • furniture and interior
  • design household items
  • vehicles and carriages
  • clothing and personal belongings
  • pictures and maps
  • Historical buildings
In addition to the material objects, stories and memories of the people found their way into the collection, which alone or in addition to objects provide information about everyday life. In recent years, the collection has also been expanded to include the post-war history of the Rhineland. The objects are related to the Rhineland marketplace, which focuses on Rhineland history since 1945. In addition to the pure documentation of contemporary history, the objects also serve to furnish the buildings and thus as communication tools.
