Forest Learning Centre Eifel

The „Forest Learning Centre Eifel" (WPZ) originated from a cooperation between the Landschaftsverband Rheinland (LVR: a self-governing body of Rhenish councils), Regional Forestry and Wood NRW, and the Zülpicher Börde Forestry Authority. It is located in the LVR-Open Air Museum Kommern.

An out-of-school learning venue, the WPZ presents the forest as an interactive nature experience. In the process it combines education about the environment and playful involvement with nature by authentically experiencing the forest and its multifarious relationships with humans.

The topics which the WPZ deals with range from forest growth, through inter-relationships of the forest eco-system, to the treatment of forest in different epochs up to the present day.

Forest experience trail

The Forest Learning Centre Eifel (WPZ) has created a forest trail in the grounds of the museum, to experience the woodland with all five senses. Trusting one’s partner, blind-folded on secret paths, this experience of the nature of the forest gives it a new dimension and makes the variety of woodland tangible. For families and groups it is also possible to explore the trail themselves with a „Forest Experience Rucksack" (available at the museum entrance).
