Guided tours are possible for all age groups and are adapted to their respective needs.

General Guided Tour through the Museum

This general tour offers an overview of the Open Air Museum grounds, the four Groups of Buildings typical of their regions, as well as the plants and animals in the museum.

Duration approx. 2 hours

Number of participants: max. 20 persons

Guide fee in German 70 € / foreign language guide fee 80 €

Thematic Guided Tours

The thematic guided tour offers a deeper insight into special areas of living and dwelling in the country:

  • Self-sufficiency in rural families
  • Women’s and men’s work on the land
  • Children’s lives, education and child labour on the land
  • Keeping cattle in the Rhenish landscapes and animal breeds in the museum
  • Agricultural implements and tools
  • Artisans in the country
  • Living conditions in farmhouses
  • Building research: forms of houses and farmsteads

Note: Genereal and thematic guided tours can be combined to one tour

Guided Tour through the Exhibition

A round tour through a current changing exhibition in the museum

Guided tour to the "Marketplace Rhineland"

A tour to the new group of buildings "Marketplace Rheinland", which is being constructed at the museum. It is dedicated to the second half of the 20th century.

You can store your luggage in lockers by the entrance and reception desks.

Kids’ Carts

By the entrance and reception desks you can hire a kids’ cart (Bollerwagen) to pull behind you for a fee of 3 €. During the year the museum offers a series of events and activities especially for children. You can find details about them in the Annual Program.

Walking frames

The Friends of the Museum have purchased walking framesfor the museum, which can be borrowed at the entrance / reception desk.

Barrier-free Access

The Open Air Museum is situated on a hilltop and therefore includes gradients of up to 17 % in some places. The footpaths are largely made of cobblestones, as well as water-bound surfaces. Dogs in the Museum

Naturally, your dog is allowed to come into the museum with you. But please keep the dog on a short leash (reel-leashes must be locked) while observing the usual legal regulations. Unfortu-nately, dogs are not allowed into the houses and exhibition halls.


You will encounter subjects for photographic and video recordings all over the grounds. Natural-ly, you are welcome to photograph or film them, but only for private purposes to remember your visit.
